Three-peat! Real San Juan Wins Third Consecutive CCSL Title

Real San Juan defeated Sacramento Sporting 5 - 3 to win a third consecutive CCSL League Championship. With the Championship on the line, Sunday's game had plenty of drama, wind, and goals. The fireworks flew inside the first fifteen minutes when Zac Matteoli applied a tough tackle on Real midfielder Alvaro Delgado on the left side of the field. Sensing the tough tackle, Delgado hopped to avoid Matteoli and landed on Matteoli's leg. This led to an altercation resulting in Matteoli being sent off along with Real center back Utodi Madu. Now with both sides playing with ten, the game opened up considerably. Moments later in the 15th minute, substitute Jacob Lile made his first touch of the game count. Lile sent a cross to the middle of the box that Sporting defender Mike DeMotte inadvertently headed into his own net to give Real a 1 - 0 lead. Minutes later, Kenyon Hill served a ball from the left side to Eliot Chambers on the far post. Chambers hit a firm cross on the ground that Art Temblador knocked into the Sporting goal to increase Real's lead to 2 - 0. Real increased the lead to 3 - 0 in the 28th minute when Don Ribaudo played a perfectly weighted pass to a sprinting Patrick Nelle who buried the shot past the exposed Sporting keeper.

The last 15 minutes of the first half Real San Juan experienced a 3-goal onslaught from Sporting reminiscent of AC Milan's collapse at the hands of Liverpool in the 2005 European Cup final. Sporting's first goal came in the 39th minute when the always dangerous Jason Jones received a long wind-aided goal kick that floated of over the Real defense. Jones calmly slotted Sporting's first goal past Real keeper Conor McNulty. Soon after Sporting's first goal Ato Leone hit a swerving ball that to a "Southside bounce" over McNulty's head to cut Real's lead to 1. Sporting equalized just before half time when Real turned the ball over in their own half and Ato Leone got behind the defense to score his second goal.

In spite of squandering a 3-goal lead, a determined Real began the next half with a goal by Eliot Chambers in the 50th minute. Chambers received the ball on the right side of the Sporting penalty box and skillfully beat two Sporting defenders and slipped a shot past the Sporting keeper. Patrick Nelle doubled the Real lead in the 55th minute when he received a pass from Don Ribaudo, got in behind the Sporting defense and beat the Sporting keeper with a clever shot with the outside of his right foot.

Real's 5 - 3 victory over Sporting gives Real its third CCSL Championship. Real now looks to repeat as Peri Clark Cup Champions with a 2:00 PM playoff game this Sunday against Dixon Leon at Southside Park.
