RSJ Tames Feisty Lions 3 - 2

Friday, April 21st, pitted two teams moving in opposite directions; one team battling for their second CCSL Championship and the other team facing relegation from the CCSL's top division. The California Lions and their fans displayed the urgency of a team and its supporters fearful of relegation. The Lions fans showed up with their best taunts for the visiting team. Due to a variety of reasons, Real only suited eleven players. Real started the game off with a bang when Brent Hamilton crossed the ball to John Chimienti at the top of the box. Chimienti opened his Real account when his shot at the right corner of the goal was partially deflected by a retreating Lions defender into the goal. Several minutes later, the Lions answered back when their left forward picked up a ball in the Real defense and slotted a shot past Conor McNulty. Real was able to take the lead back when Alexis Maurtua found a streaking Pat Nelle on the left side of the field. Nelle beat the last Lions defender and goalkeeper to find the back of the net. Real took a 3 - 1 lead with one of the more interesting goals of the season. Ruben Mora broke the right side of the Lions' defense down and slipped a pass to Pat Nelle in the right corner. At the byline, Nelle lofted a cross to Tim Bystrowski on the far post. Bystrowski headed the ball almost straight down and the ball bounced in front of the keeper and then over his head. An opportunistic Alexis Maurtua poked the ball in for Real's third goal. Or was the ball already in and Bystrowski's goal-scoring streak extended to two games? The Lions were able to convert a PK to make things interesting, but the game ended 3 - 2 in favor of RSJ. Real remains in first place and they face their closest competitors Aguias PSC Tuesday, April 25th, 7:00 PM at Whittier Ranch Park in North Sacramento.
