RSJ Finally Break Their ‘Aguias Jinx’
After several years of struggle against Aguias PSC, Real San Juan finally made a breakthrough, winning 2-0 at Southside Park.
Both teams entered the match shorthanded with Aguias missing starters and RSJ having to play without strikers Anthony Chimienti and Jimmy Frazelle, as well as winger Tim Bystrowski.
Despite a sluggish beginning, RSJ created several chances in the opening half, hitting the crossbar once from a Utodi Madu header and then a rasping shot from Eliot Ricks-Chambers that forced Aguias keeper Mark Torguson to parry away. During the latter stages of the first half, Aguias began to create chances through their midfield pairing of Matt Scammacca and Jason Isaac. The introduction of leading striker Martin Sims at the end of the first half further buoyed the veteran side. The score at halftime looked very familiar, 0-0.
The 2nd half began with RSJ scoring on a bending shot from the right side of the box from striker Oscar Sandoval after good work down the left side of the RSJ flank. Sandoval received the ball and bent it around Torguson for a 1-0 lead. Almost after the ensuing kick-off, Aguias created a chance in the box only to have their shot hit directly at RSJ ‘keeper Conor McNulty. RSJ continued to resist the pressure of an Aguias side, looking for an equalizer, with the back four of Mercado, Hamilton, Maurtua and Hill holding fast.
The second and final goal came from a breakaway opportunity for Ricks-Chambers in the 84th minute, which, one-on-one with Torguson, slid the ball to the left, where Art Temblador coolly slid the ball inside the left post.
After a lethargic first half, RSJ played with more urgency in the 2nd half, winning numerous head balls and 50/50 challenges. Next week, another challenge awaits in the form of CASA Sporting, who defeated Academica 3-2 in the previous day’s match. - Kenyon Hill
