Real Lose Late to Cruz Azul
Cruz Azul avenged a 2 - 1 loss to Real San Juan two weeks prior by defeating Real 1 - 0 with a late goal by forward Victor Lopez. The game was hard fought between both teams. Coming off of a 2 - 2 draw with Dixon Leon, Real was searching to find its winning form. Unfortunately for Real, Cruz Azul was able to withstand many quality Real scoring opportunities and capitalize late in the game.
Real started the game with McNulty in goal, Bystrowski, Simmons, Brambila, and Okugo in the back. Cazel, Frazelle, Jahn and Ricks-Chambers in the midfield with Nelle and Sandoval up top. Real's offense looked to exploit the flanks of the Cruz Azul defense like they did two weeks before. The Cruz Azul center backs did an excellent job of intercepting many dangerous crosses served by Cazel and Ricks-Chambers. The Cruz Azul 'keeper came up with some big saves to keep his sheet clean. The Real back line highlighted by a couple big McNulty saves was able to also keep Victor Lopez and the Cruz Azul offense scoreless in the first half. The half ended 0 - 0 with a slight edge in possession and shots to Real, but Cruz Azul very dangerous in the counter.
The second half proved to be more of the same. Real continued to squander quality chances and Cruz Azul looked to counter quickly through Lopez. Real's best chance of the second half came when Oscar Sandoval found himself one on one with the Cruz Azul 'keeper. Sandoval calmly pushed his shot passed the 'keeper only to be denied by the left post. As the game went on, Real players started to go down injured. First Mercado, then Simmons went down with injuries. The turning point came when Hugo Brambila pulled his hamstring and came off the field. With ten players on the field, Cruz Azul wisely attacked the space vacated by the injured Brambila. With about five minutes left in the game, Lopez received a pass from the left side beat a Real defender and then shot the ball past 'keeper McNulty. Real pressed in the final moments to score but could not find the back of the net. The game ended with Cruz Azul earning the 1 - 0 victory.
