Real Defeates Academica 4 - 0

Real defeated Academica of Turlock 4 - 0 at Southside Park last Sunday, March 18th. Typical of an early morning game after St. Patrick's Day, the level of play in the first half was erratic. Real possessed well out of the back, but failed to penetrate Academica's defense early on. Academica looked to spring its speedy and hard-working forwards in the counterattack. After several dangerous runs by the Academica forwards, the Real defense of goalkeeper Conor McNulty and defenders Kyle Navarro, Marcos Mercado, Brent Hamilton, Hector Gutierrez and Kenyon Hill were able to contain the Academica offense to maintain the clean sheet. Due to injuries to Patrick Nelle and Ryan Rhoads, sixteen year old Chris Gaschen took full advantage of his opportunity to enter the starting line up and play ninety minutes.  Real's first goal came in the thirtieth minute when goalkeeper Conor McNulty expertly distributed a long throw to Art Temblador on the right side of the field. Temblador used his excellent vision of the field to find a sprinting Gaschen headed down the right touchline Gaschen exhibited good composure as he held off an Academica defender and sent a cross for an eager Jimmy Frazelle. Frazelle beat the Academica keeper to put Real up 1 - 0. The first half ended with Real leading 1 - 0.

Real started the second half as they finished the first with the run of play shifting in their favor. A highlight reel worthy goal was scored by Art Temblador in the fifteenth minute to increase the Real lead to 2 - 0. Temblador spun and struck a ball about thirty yards away from the Academica goal that soared over the goalkeeper's head into the right side of the goal. Five minutes later, Real continued to roll as Eliot Ricks-Chambers calmly tapped in an Art Temblador corner kick to make the score 3 - 0. The fourth and final goal came when Jimmy Frazelle scored off a quick wall pass combination with Ricks-Chambers in the middle of the Academica penalty box.

With three games remaining in the CCSL season, a third  CCSL Championship is well within reach for Real San Juan. Aguias PSC, Sacramento Sporting and CD Lobos will all look to thwart Real's quest for a "three-peat". Real's next game is 8:00 PM, Wednesday at Southside Park versus Aguias PSC.
