Real Avenges Brutal Loss, Headed For Championship Game
Real San Juan avenged its Mother's Day loss to Aguias with a 3 - 0 victory to earn a spot in the Peri Clark Cup Championship game. With memories of the previous week's embarrassment still fresh on their minds, Real San Juan players were motivated to extend their season and end Aguias' season one game early.
Real began the game with Dominic Jakubek in goal for the suspended Conor McNulty, an all Sac State back line of Omar Martinez, Brent Hamilton, Adam Owens, and Utodi Madu, a midfield of Eliot Ricks-Chambers, Amobi Okugo, Alavaro Delgado, and Art Temblador and Patrick Nelle and Oscar Sandoval up top. The game featured many of the usual suspects from both teams. The Aguias combination of Brian Willey on the right flank and Martin Sims up top proved to be dangerous in early in the game. Real dodged a couple of bullets in the form of Willey crosses to Martin Sims in the Real penalty box. Real answered with Eliot Ricks-Chambers in dangerous form with several streaking runs down the right side with inviting crosses to both Nelle and Sandoval. Although both teams had their chances to score, the hard fought first half ended 0 - 0.
As Sunday's temperature began to rise, Real's offense began to heat up. The second half started well for Real as their offense staged the game in the Aguias defensive half. The speed of Patrick Nelle has always troubled the Aguias defense and today was no exception. Real's first goal came when a Nelle run into the Aguias penalty box caused an Aguias defender to foul Nelle. Instead of a penalty kick, an indirect free kick was given to Real on the left side of the box. Real took a 1 - 0 lead when Chris Gaschen's brilliant shot floated over the Aguias wall and into the upper left corner of the goal. The Gaschen goal ignited Real's offense and they continued to dominate possession with Aguias now chasing the equalizer. Dominic Jakubek was forced to make a couple key saves on crosses from the Aguias counterattack to preserve the slim Real advantage. Real's efforts were rewarded when a switched ball from the left to the right found midfielder Josh Robinson isolated 1 v 1 on the right side of the Aguias box. Robinson slyly sidestepped the Aguias defender and beat 'keeper Torguson with a shot into the left corner of the goal to double the Real lead. Down 2 - 0, Aguias did not give up but started to show signs of fatigue from the 100 degree day. As the game progressed towards the end, Aguias found it more and more difficult to get players behind the ball in transition. The third goal came in the waning moments of the game from Amobi Okugo. Isolated 1 v 1 on the left side of the Aguias goal, Okugo attacked the Aguias defender with several stepovers and then unleashed a low driven shot to beat 'keeper Torguson for the third Real goal.
Emotions from both teams ran a little high as there were still some hard feelings from last week's game. The game ended 3 - 0 with Real earning an opportunity to play CCSL Champions Academica in the Peri Clark Cup Championship game. This game is scheduled for May 31st, 3:00 PM at Southside Park.
