End of the Season Update
The last two weeks of the CCSL season have been unpredictable and exciting. Real's quest to repeat as CCSL Champions was stymied with a 1 - 0 loss to a tough Aguias PSC side. This game featured two of the CCSL's top teams on one of the CCSL's worst fields. Aguias PSC's solid defense earned a clean sheet. Goalkeeper Mark Torguson came up big when he saved an Anthony Chimienti penalty kick in the first half to keep the score knotted at zero. Just before the end of the first half, Aguias was awarded a free kick just outside of Real's box. Martin Sims skillfully placed a shot around the wall and just inside of the left post to beat goalkeeper Conor McNulty. Although Real was able to create several good scoring opportunities, the Aguias PSC defense held on to secure a 1 - 0 victory.
At this point, Aguias PSC looked to be in the driver's seat for CCSL Championship. If Aguias PSC and Real were to win their remaining games, Aguias would have a two-point advantage. Real no longer controlled their destiny. Fortunately for Real, Aguias PSC has lost two games in the last two weeks. Facing Team Mexico, a team in the relegation zone, Aguias PSC lost 2 - 1. Aguias PSC also lost 2 - 1 to San Jose, a team battling for a position in the playoffs.
Real traveled to Dixon last Thursday, May 4th, to face third place Dixon Leon. Jimmy Frazelle and Pat Nelle each scored a goal to lead a short handed Real side to a 2 - 1 victory. Real, starting the game with only ten players, took the early 1 - 0 lead when Jimmy Frazelle intercepted a pass in the Dixon defense and beat the Dixon goalkeeper. Pat Nelle scored the second goal when a Ruben Mora penalty kick was saved by the Dixon goalkeeper and deflected to an onrushing Nelle. Nelle calmly slotted the ball to make it 2 - 0. Dixon was able to cut the lead in half when a ball punched out by McNulty was intercepted at the top of the box by a Dixon forward. The Dixon forward's shot found its way through a mass of players into the back of the net. Apparently the game was too exciting for one Dixon fan. The game was called with about twenty five minutes left after a Dixon fan ran onto the field to attack Real goalkeeper Conor McNulty. Unfortunately for Dixon, this fan's actions prevented them from finishing the game with a better result. Real now has an opportunity to secure the CCSL Championship with a victory over Sacramento Sporting Wednesday, May 10th, 8:00 PM at Whittier Ranch Park.
